How to Exercise Christ’s Authority?

As believers in Christ, we are endowed with the amazing authority that He has granted us through His sacrifice. But what does it truly mean to have this authority, and how do we use it effectively? Understanding the nature of this authority and how to operate in it is essential for walking in victory over the powers of darkness and fulfilling God’s will in our lives.

The Source of Authority

First and foremost, the authority that believers have is given to us in Christ Jesus. It is not something we possess on our own but is granted through our relationship with Him. When we accept Christ into our lives, we are not only saved but also granted the power to stand firm against the forces of evil. However, it’s important to note that simply pronouncing the name of Jesus is not enough. Authority in Christ does not work through imitation or empty words.

This was clearly shown in the book of Acts when a group of Jewish exorcists tried to cast out demons in the name of Jesus. They said, “In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” However, their efforts were in vain because they were trying to operate in authority without a personal relationship with Jesus. The demon-possessed man replied, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” (Acts 19:15). This illustrates that we cannot wield authority in the name of Jesus by merely copying the actions of others. Authority flows from a relationship with Christ and is effective only when it is genuine and rooted in faith.

The Power of Relationship with God

To fully activate the authority we have in Christ, we must understand that it is not a tool to be used for self-promotion or personal gain. God gives us this authority to fulfill His purpose and will. Therefore, we must approach it with humility and obedience, always seeking God’s guidance. We are to imitate the ministry of others, but only as it aligns with God’s plan for us.

In the same way that a sword must be used regularly to stay sharp, the authority we have in Christ requires constant exercise. If we fail to use it, it becomes dull and less effective. On the other hand, the more we use our authority in Christ, the sharper and more effective it becomes. This is why it is crucial to live in continual submission to God’s will. When we do, the authority we have in Christ becomes more powerful and impactful.

Key Components to Effectively Use Our Authority

To walk in the authority that Christ has given us, there are a few vital things to consider:

1. Faith
   Without faith, we cannot operate in the authority Christ has granted us. Faith is the foundation upon which everything else is built. We must believe in God’s promises and trust that His authority is at work through us. It is not by our strength or ability, but by faith in His power.

2. Submission to God’s Control
   We must put our lives under God’s control. Authority is not meant to be wielded for personal gain or to build our own kingdom. When we submit to God’s leadership and His timing, He will guide how and when to use our authority.

3. Receiving God’s Word
   It is vital to receive God’s Word into our hearts and minds. The Word of God is powerful, and it is the source of our authority. When we speak His Word with conviction, it becomes a weapon against the forces of darkness.

Conclusion: Using Authority in Christ

Believers have been given an incredible gift in the authority of Christ. It is not something to be taken lightly or used carelessly. Just as a sword must be handled with care and precision, so must our authority in Christ be used wisely, in alignment with God’s will. When we have faith, live under God’s control, and receive His Word, we become effective vessels of His power.

Let us not allow the authority we’ve been given to become dull from lack of use. Let’s walk in the strength that comes from God, continually using the authority we have in Christ to bring His kingdom to earth. The more we use it, the stronger and more impactful we become in His service.

As we grow in our relationship with God, so too will our understanding and effectiveness in using the authority He has entrusted to us. So, let us go forth, using our authority with purpose and power, to glorify God in all that we do.
