The anointing within you transforms your character; the anointing upon you empowers your calling. One helps you grow in Christ, the other helps you serve like Christ. Both are essential.

💬 Introduction
In this powerful message, Pastor Caleb Khaling teaches on a foundational truth every believer must grasp: the distinction between the inner anointing and the upon anointing. Drawing from Isaiah 10:27 and 1 John 2:27, he explains how God’s power equips us not only for ministry, but for inner transformation and daily victory.
The anointing is the supernatural empowerment of God that breaks bondages, reveals truth, and enables believers to fulfill kingdom purposes. According to Isaiah 10:27, the “fatness” or “increase” of the anointing breaks yokes—like curses, sickness, and poverty.
But to walk in its fullness, we need to understand its two-fold nature.
“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.” — 1 John 2:20
This anointing enters a believer at the moment of salvation. It is permanent and directly connected to our relationship with Jesus. It helps us:
Understand and apply God’s Word
Discern truth from error
Develop spiritual maturity and character
Grow the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
📖 Galatians 2:20 emphasizes this truth: Christ now lives in us. This internal work of the Holy Spirit leads us into intimacy and holiness. If this inner life is neglected—by ignoring the Word or focusing only on outward gifts—we risk spiritual dryness and temptation.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you…” — Acts 1:8
This refers to the baptism of the Holy Spirit, an empowerment for ministry and service. Unlike the inner anointing, this is:
Situational and momentary — it comes upon you when needed
Used for spiritual gifts like teaching, prophecy, healing, and miracles
Directed toward the edification of others, not self
While inner anointing is about being, the upon anointing is about doing.
We were never meant to choose one over the other.
🔹 The inner anointing helps you become like Christ.
🔹 The upon anointing helps you serve like Christ.
Without the inner work, gifts can become dangerous. Without the outer power, we remain ineffective in ministry. Both are needed in balance.
Pastor Caleb encourages believers to be intentional:
Study the Word daily to strengthen your inner man
Spend time in God’s presence to keep the fire of the Holy Spirit burning
Walk in obedience to remain a vessel ready for use
🗝️ “The anointing in you keeps you holy. The anointing upon you makes you useful. Never neglect one for the other.”
God desires His people to be deep in truth and bold in power. If we only seek anointing for public ministry and forget the private walk, we miss the point. Let the Word and the Spirit work together in your life. Grow inwardly, so you can overflow outwardly.
